Mercury Energy Distributors Inc is sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday August 2nd from 12:30 pm through 5:30 pm at Chase Collegiate School located at 565 Chase Parkway in Waterbury. The drive will be held in the Goss Field House.
Participation in this blood drive will honor local business owner, David G. Devino Sr. who succumbed to his ongoing battle with aplastic anemia and adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML). David, who was a generous man, a devoted husband and father, as well as very a talented musician passed away surrounded by his loving family who would like to remind everyone that blood donations help those who are afflicted with this and other diseases, to have some normalcy as they undergo treatment. Aplastic anemia is a condition that occurs when the body stops producing enough new blood cells, leaving those afflicted feeling fatigued, and at higher risk of infections and uncontrolled bleeding. A rare and serious condition, aplastic anemia can develop at any age, may occur suddenly, or it can occur slowly and get worse over a long period of time. Treatment for aplastic anemia may include medications, frequent blood transfusions or a stem cell transplant. Adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. This type of cancer usually gets worse quickly if it is not treated. It is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. David was fortunate enough to find a bone marrow match and was undergoing treatment before his passing.
David G Devino Sr. was a partner in the Mercury Energy Distributors’ family (with Michael Jr, Marty, Tom, and David’s mother, Sadie), which has been a part of the fabric of this community for generations since 1947. For over a half century, the family’s commitment to service has reached beyond the business and into supporting communities in and around the greater Waterbury area. Their involvement in community service organizations, local arts & educational programs and youth sports depicts a family committed to improving the lives of those that they serve. This is the fourth year that David’s daughter-in-law, Stephanie, has organized this drive in his memory, and it has been a very popular drive for the American Red Cross during the summer months.
